VACANCY REFERENCE: WASH Assistant - DZ-066
JOB PURPOSE:
WASH and shelter civil engineer will be working inside Syria to provide effective and efficient support to the implementation of the WASH and shelter programs in the area of the IRW Syria operation.
SCOPE
The position focuses on supporting the delivery of WASH and civil engineering interventions in humanitarian settings, ensuring safe and sustainable water and sanitation services for affected communities. It covers technical design support, field supervision of construction and rehabilitation works, quality control, contractor monitoring, and compliance with standards. The role also includes participation in assessments, coordination with stakeholders, preparation of technical documents, and reporting to ensure effective and timely project implementation.
The WASH &Shelter Assistant supports the implementation and management of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) activities within humanitarian or development projects. The position works under the supervision of the WASH Officer to ensure the provision of safe water services, appropriate sanitation systems, construction, and the improvement of hygiene practices in the targeted communities.
Main Responsibilities:
Implementing projects related to the rehabilitation or construction of water networks, wells, reservoirs, and sanitation systems.
Conduct field visits to project sites to monitor the progress of activities and ensure compliance with technical specifications and approved plans.
Implementation of needs assessments and the collection and analysis of data related to water supply and sanitation services.
Preparation of technical and periodic reports on work progress and field challenges.
Coordinate with engineering teams, local communities, and community committees to ensure proper implementation of activities.
Follow up on the supply of materials and equipment related to water and sanitation projects and ensure their proper use.
Supervising construction and civil works with approved drawings and technical specifications.
Monitoring contractors’ construction activities, verifying work quantities, and ensuring the quality of building materials and workmanship used in WASH facilities.

Knowledge, Experience, and Qualifications
Civil engineering degree.
Minimum 3 years of related experience with at least 1 year with international NGO.
Strong communication, interpersonal & technical skills.
Proven ability to work independently and as a team member.
Ability to take initiatives if required.
Ability to multi-task effectively as well as display professionalism and confidence.
Good report writing skills.
Excellent computer skills.
Familiarity of monitoring & evaluation instruments & documents is preferable.
Able to work effectively under, & adapt to, difficult conditions.
Willingness & ability to travel within inside the country.
Language
Good in both Languages English & Arabic (written and spoken).
IT skills
Very good computer skills.
Proficiency in the internet and search tools.
Proficiency in MS office and the ability to use software necessary for project management and reporting. (Excel and word is a must)
Proficiency in using the construction and designing software needed for the work.
