
The Security and Translator Officer contributes to the achievement of organisation programme objectives by providing efficient and effective security advice to organisation staff, translating for organisation’s operations, and assisting the Access and Security Manager in implementing the Security Plan. The range of activities may evolve over time.
The primary responsibility of this position is to support operations in Damascus and to organize international staff visits, with a secondary responsibility for carrying out area risk assessments and collecting and collating information. The Security Officer must possess excellent knowledge of the security dynamics in Damascus and the surrounding areas, as well as the ability to write accurate security incident reports.

General Description
The Security and Translator Officer will protect organisationpremises, assets, and personnel, maintain a high-visibility presence, and prevent all illegal or inappropriate actions. (The goal is to detect, deter, observe, and report). Also, he/she will provide support in translating documents, coordination and work-related meetings.
Security:
• Familiarize him/herself with organizational procedures, SOPs, and contingency measures.
• Protect the organization's property and staff by maintaining a safe and secure environment.
• Comprehend, review, and analyze security matters related to his/her geographical areas.
• Assist in planning, coordinating, and executing safe field visits for Staff to implementation sites.
• Review and analyze security developments, CPs, and routes undertaken by the mobile team.
• Perform security assessments, both routine and those required to ensure that it is safe for organization staff to enter/return to a location/duty station.
• Instill the importance of security measures in colleagues' daily working hours.
• Report any suspicious incidents and utilize incident reports using SIR's
• Keep abreast of all organization's operations in Syria, review procedures and policies, suggest corrective action and or recommendations on security, safety, and evacuation plans for Staff when requested
• Coordinate with other security organizations (Department of Safety and Security -) and military/government counterparts, as required
• Collaborate with local authorities (police, military, political, and humanitarian) in order to have actual field-based evidential reports on the ground
• Ensure UPP-NES communications are integrated into the appropriate UPP security communication system, and all Staff are trained in security and emergency procedures (including satellite phones, Garmin, and GPS coordinates) in collaboration with relevant authorities and personnel.
• Analyze the security situation and report periodically to the Security Manager and Country Representative.
• Supervise Staff, as required.
Other responsibilities:
• Review reports on incidents and breaches.
• Engage daily with field management to ensure that daily operations meet operational requirements.
• Ensure that field teams have an approved Movement Plan (MP) before conducting field visits.
• Monitor the satellite tracking system.
Translator:
• Provide accurate written translation of reports, correspondence, training materials, and other documents from Arabic to English and English to Arabic.
• Deliver consecutive translations during meetings, workshops, and interviews to ensure smooth communication between our organization, partners, authorities, and community members.
• Conduct simultaneous translation during high-level meetings, trainings, and field visits when required, ensuring accuracy, neutrality, and confidentiality.
• Support organization field missions by providing real-time interpretation with local authorities, communities, and stakeholders.
• Ensure consistency and clarity of translated materials, adapting technical and humanitarian terminology appropriately.
• Maintain confidentiality and accuracy in all translation and interpretation tasks.
• Develop and maintain a glossary of humanitarian, development, and security-related terminology to ensure consistency in translation.
• Proofread and edit translated texts to guarantee linguistic quality, style, and adherence to organizational standards.
• Provide cultural and contextual advice during interpretation to avoid miscommunication and to facilitate effective dialogue with local counterparts.
• Assist in preparing bilingual briefing notes, presentations, and reports for internal and external meetings.
• Manage time effectively to prioritize urgent translation tasks in support of security updates, incident reports, and operational communications.
• Ensure sensitivity when translating confidential or security-related content, adhering strictly to data protection and organizational confidentiality standards.
• Use translation tools, software, and digital platforms when needed to improve speed and accuracy of document translation.
Resident of Damascus with solid local knowledge of the context and access dynamics.
• A university degree in a related field.
• Very good English (spoken & written); strong report-writing skills are essential.
• Proven experience in security, safety, or access management.
• Previous experience of liaising with local authorities, community leaders, and humanitarian actors.
• Previous experience with fleet management and satellite tracking is an advantage.
• Experience in written translation and consecutive translation, plus simultaneous translation is a merit.
• Previous experience in translating documents, training, meetings, and field visits.
• Very good communication and interpersonal skills, able to engage effectively with both internal staff and external stakeholders.
• Strong analytical skills, with the ability to collect, interpret, and present complex information in a clear and effective way.
• Good computer literacy (MS Office, mapping tools, tracking software).
• Availability to travel within Syria when required.
