The position is based in Damascus, Syria and reports to the Head of Strategic Engagement, Security, and Humanitarian Access.

CONTRACT DETAILS: 

 

Contract Type: Consultancy Level 1
Duration: 11 months
Duty Station: Damascus, Syria

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive):

 

  • Support the head of security and senior management with security analysis pertaining to Syria and the Middle East; accompany engagement opportunities with counterparts; ensure continuity in the analytical workstream, including but not limited to producing topical briefs, analytical reports, operations updates, etc.
  • Act as the Country Office humanitarian access focal point and the secretariat of the technical access cell. Manage the access focal point network in the field; perform analysis on access issues and operate the relevant escalation mechanisms; participate in inter-agency access fora as directed by the focal point or the secretariat.
  • Act as the Country Office conflict sensitivity focal point. Continuously assess the conflict sensitivity of WFP's interventions in Syria; organise relevant engagement and training opportunities; support liaison with regional bureau and HQ on CS issues; support liaison with Programme, Supply Chain, and other relevant functions.
  • Support the strategic engagement workstream through political analysis and advisory activities.

STANDARD MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:

 

Master's degree in Security Management, International Relations, Political Science, Social or Military Science, Conflict Analysis, Criminology, or Law or other relevant field, or bachelor's degree with two additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses.

 

Experience: 

 

At least five years of progressively responsible experience in security analysis,
humanitarian access, conflict sensitivity, or political advisory role in a UN context.

 

Languages: 

 

Fluency (level C) in English language. Intermediate knowledge (level B) of
a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or Portuguese (a WFP working language).
