
Position Title: MEAL Assistant Department: Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) Reporting to: MEAL Team leader Location: Idlib About People In Need – PIN People in Need (PIN) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 1992 in the Czech Republic. For over 30 years, PIN has delivered relief and development assistance in more than 40 countries worldwide. Since 2012, PIN has been operational in Syria, providing humanitarian and early recovery support to conflict-affected communities in NWS and NES. Under the Whole of Syria (WoS) structure, PIN implements integrated programs across Syria through coordinated field offices. PIN’s programs focus on Emergency Food Assistance, WASH, Education, Civic Participation and Empowerment, and Early Recovery and Livelihoods Purpose of the Role The MEAL Assistant plays a key field-facing role in the MEAL team, contributing to quality monitoring and data collection. The Assistant will ensure consistent, timely, and accurate field data collection, support community engagement efforts, and help report issues and red flags. The position may spend up to 80% of the time in the field and requires adaptability, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to quality and accountability standards.
Conduct field data collection for monitoring activities, assessments, PDMs, and evaluations using digital and/or paper tools. • Carry out field observations and site visits, documenting and reporting any red flags or irregularities to the MEAL Officer and raise sensitive feedback or protection issues promptly to the MEAL Officer. • Support or guide daily enumerators and field workers as needed, ensuring adherence to data collection protocols. • Prepare and manage the logistical aspects of data collection, ensuring availability of tools, materials, and transportation. • Follow structured work plans and timelines for field activities, in coordination with MEAL Officers. • Attend training sessions on data collection tools and methodology, and remain updated on new tools or practices. • Support MEAL Officers in drafting field visit reports and documenting findings from observations and data. • Participate in data cleaning activities to ensure the accuracy and reliability of collected data. • Communicate clearly and respectfully with community members, ensuring accurate information is shared and ethical standards are upheld. • Respond effectively to field challenges and help maintain access and trust in communities. • Uphold and promote data protection, confidentiality, and humanitarian principles. • Contribute to fostering a learning and accountability culture within the MEAL team. • Participate in the testing and piloting of new or revised data collection tools, providing field-level feedback for improvement.
Essential:
• Minimum of a secondary school diploma.
• At least 1 year of experience in data collection or a MEAL-related position.
• Native Arabic speaker with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Understanding of MEAL principles, humanitarian standards, and data quality protocols.
• Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail in fieldwork.
• Ability to work independently and manage time and tasks under pressure.
• Strong knowledge of the local culture and context, including geographic familiarity with implementation areas.
• Commitment to the organization’s Code of Conduct and core values.
• Ability to handle field challenges and engage with communities effectively and respectfully.
• Familiarity with Kobo, ODK, or other mobile data collection tools.
• Ability to use MS Excel, Word, or basic data entry systems
Preferred:
• University degree or diploma in social sciences, education, statistics, or a related field.
• Language proficiency: English (B2 level preferred), Kurdish (preferred in specific contexts).
• Knowledge in developing different data collection tools.
