
Position: Finance officer

Background:
Global Communities is an international non-governmental organization with more than 40 years of experience delivering humanitarian assistance in complex crises. Since 2014, we have been a leading humanitarian actor in Syria, providing lifesaving aid and supporting long-term resilience for internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and host communities, reaching at least 2.65 million people.
Operating throughout northern Syria, we implement a principled, community-centered response in partnership with trusted Syrian NGOs. Global Communities now contributes to Syria's post-conflict recovery through area-based approaches that promote durable solutions for the displaced populations and social cohesion in the communities of return.
GC intends to hire a full-time finance officer to work as a part of finance team in Damascus (Or Aleppo) office. The position reports to the Senior Finance Officer.
1. Financial Accounting & General Ledger Management
• Record, review, and post daily financial transactions in accordance with GAAP and internal accounting policies.
• Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
• Monitor accruals, prepayments, fixed assets, and other balance sheet schedules.
• Ensure proper documentation and filing of all accounting records.
2. Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable
• Process supplier invoices, expense claims, and payment requests with accuracy and timeliness.
• Verify invoice authenticity, supporting documents, and compliance with procurement and finance policies.
• Monitor outstanding payables and receivables.
3. Financial Reporting & Reconciliation
• Prepare monthly bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies proactively.
• Support the month-end and year-end closing activities, ensuring compliance with reporting timelines.
• Assist in the preparation of management reports, financial analysis, and statutory reports.
• Develop and maintain detailed schedules to support internal and external audit processes.
4. Compliance, Controls & Audit Support
• Ensure strict adherence to internal control procedures and financial governance frameworks.
• Support internal and external audit engagements by providing accurate and timely documentation.
• Assist in implementing corrective actions to address audit findings and improve processes.
5. Budgeting & Financial Analysis
• Provide support in developing annual budgets, forecasts, variances monitoring, and financial plans.
6. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Administrative Support
• Coordinate with Procurement, HR, Sales, Operations, and other departments to validate accounting data.
• Ensure timely communication of financial information to internal stakeholders.
• Provide administrative and analytical support to the Finance Manager as required.
Education and Training:
• Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or relevant field or a combination of experience and education working in this sector is required.
• Professional certificates is/are highly preferred.
Experience:
• Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting.
• Previously worked with local NGO’s and/or international donor funded programs preferred.
• Experience in USAID/BHA and UNOCHA projects is preferred.
Technical skills:
• Excellent analytical skills with attention to detail.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel.
• Good skills in accounting software are mandatory (QuickBooks or similar software).
• Good skills in ERP (Oracle NetSuite) are highly preferred.
Other Qualifications:
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Team player with excellent planning skills
Language skills:
• Excellent command of spoken and written English is mandatory.
