To collaborate with MSF medical staff on the integration of psychiatric treatment with basic healthcare and MHPSS services in
order to ensure the treatment of patients suffering from severe and common psychiatric disorders.
Accountabilities:
• Provide training and supervision to national and international medical staff (doctors and nurses) on diagnosis and treatment of severe
and common mental health disorders according to MSF guidelines and other relevant international guidelines (e.g. WHO’s mhGAP)
• Participate as a member of the mental health team when present and offer supervision and support to national psychologists and
counselors
• Ensure that guidelines and psychotropic medications from MSF standard drug list are available in the project
• Ensure that proper information on treatment and follow up are collected in order to monitor the provision of care.
• Evaluate in-country available psychiatric services including possibilities for psychiatric hospitalization and the quality of these services.
• Establish collaboration/communication with medical specialties in the project in order to achieve a multi-disciplinary approach
to patient care. Specifically, act as a bridge between medical and MHPSS teams to foster close collaboration and strengthen
our patient-centered approach
With the project coordination team, he/ she will organize and provide the 5-day psychiatry training to MSF GPs working
in Rural Damascus/ Aleppo/ Latakia projects of MSF
- With support from the Mental Health Referent at MSF-HQ in Brussels, he/ she will organize the contents of the psychiatry
training tailored into the Syrian context, taking into consideration practical aspects of the course and based on MSF
guidelines and WHO’s mhGAP
- Provide face-to-face supervision among participants in the first 3 months after the training to ensure that practical
application of the concepts and skills development is optimized. This can be arranged individually among the
participants, which should happen at least 2 sessions per week per participant for the first 3 months of the training
programme
- Facilitate feedback sessions among the participants on points to improve with competency building using the MSF
supervision toolkit
- Facilitate regular meetings for updates with the Mental Health referent, the projects and mission medical coordination
- Support to the project medical team (Project Medical Referent and Project Pharmacy Manager/ Supervisor) in analysing
psychotropic medications consumption and make recommendations with upcoming orders
- Support the project medical team in building/ reinforcing referral pathways for specialized care – psychiatric support
- Reinforce patient confidentiality among MHGap participants and the MH team of the project
- Submission of monthly medical reports stating accomplishments, challenges and priorities to the project medical team
- Respect MSF’s lines of communication and principles, including security rules at project level
Requirements:
Education: MD degree, specialized training in Psychiatry
Experience: Essential working experience as a psychiatrist
Experience in facilitating mhGap training and supervision, essential
iNGO/NGO experience is desirable
Languages: English and Arabic are essential
Knowledge/skills: Communications and Teaching skills, desirable
MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) skills, essential
